Knees, 2022

Materials: Ceramic, glaze, and tennis ball

Description:

“Knees” responds to the infinite world of organic forms, drawing inspiration from the enchanting Amanita muscaria mushroom, known to be poisonous if mishandled. This piece explores shamanic experiences, psychedelia, and spirituality, tracing its influence in popular culture, from folklore to commercial branding.

The medicinal properties of mushrooms and their integral role in our daily lives, from medicine to the culinary delights of cheese-making and vegetable fermentation, and ofcourse, delightful alcoholic beverages like wine and beer.

“Knees” contemplates humanity's penchant for categorizing and compartmentalizing plants, delving into the history of classification and the misuse of eugenics to assert superiority among races.

Its form evokes the ethereal mushroom cloud of an atomic bomb blast, sparking introspection on the broader cultural tapestry woven by war and human-induced destruction.

The hat-like structure pays homage to the resilience of early Chinese miners who migrated to California in the mid-1800s, affectionately dubbed as 'basket heads' for their protective headgear, serving as a visual testament to their indomitable spirit. Mushrooms, with their remarkable ability to thrive in the aftermath of devastation, symbolize hope amidst adversity, notably evidenced by their flourishing presence and making toxic soil healthy again in former nuclear fallout zones like Chernobyl, Fukushima, and Nagasaki.

"Knees" embodies the delicate interplay between the robustness and fragility of nature and humanity, inviting viewers to contemplate the intricate dance of strength and vulnerability that defines our existence.

+1: Pottery

Manhattan Beach Art Center

The tradition of pottery has historically depended on the unique relationship between mentors and mentees as a fundamental cornerstone of advancement. Established potters often take on apprentices or mentees to impart their knowledge, techniques, and artistic vision. This bond not only nurtures skill but also cultivates a profound appreciation for the craft's heritage, cultural significance, and personal expression. Through guidance, critique, and shared experiences, mentors empower mentees to explore their creativity, hone their skills, and add their own threads to the rich tapestry of pottery traditions.

+1 is an exhibition that endeavors to celebrate the interconnectedness of artistic lineage and creative inspiration in pottery. Each participating artist is tasked with extending an invitation to an artist they deeply respect or have been mentored by, reflecting the ethos of mentorship and collaboration inherent in pottery traditions. Through +1, audiences gain insight into the unique dynamics of pottery and the culture surrounding it.
